The Deceptively Sweet Bears and Cool Cars of Yellowstone in the ’60s and ’70s

The 1960s was a critical time in Yellowstone history. The United States’ first national park was grappling with its identity. “Is it a resort? Is it a golf course? Can visitors pet the animals? Should we allow hunting?” These were open questions at the time. The park was still figuring out how to manage visitors’ interactions with bears, which were considered both a draw and a danger.

By 1976 the park had worked hard to wean bears off human food through a variety of measures, including closing the garbage dumps, strictly enforcing the no-feeding rule, and transporting bears from the front to back country.

The way the Tower fell was scary as fuck. Look,  it didn’t just break off, it crashed down as if it was a domino effect, floor by floor. There were people in that building. Take a moment out of your day and reblog this for the people who saved lives that day and for the poor souls who didn’t make it.
